    Poor writing and casting

I thought I had seen every episode of Gunsmoke up until Chester was replaced with Festus. Chester nor Festus was nowhere to be found and Burt Reynolds only had one nonspeaking spot in on scene. The fist 20 minutes also played like some crummy comedy which I did not enjoy.

This episode was not very good to me - I think the writers wanted you to feel sorry for the "old man" but he was so unattractive, testy, craggy, and such a blowhard I just couldn't feel any compassion for him. Oh well. At least we got to enjoy Rayford Barnes as his usual slimy scene stealing self as he did in other episodes of Gunsmoke.
