- Chief Sheriff Oliver B. Stamp: [Stamp looks at the body of the dead boy] They scalped him all right. The savages!
- Hec Ramsey, Deputy Sheriff: Hey, you know where Indians picked up that little trick, scalpin'?
- Chief Sheriff Oliver B. Stamp: No.
- Hec Ramsey, Deputy Sheriff: From the white man.
- Chief Sheriff Oliver B. Stamp: I don't believe it.
- Hec Ramsey, Deputy Sheriff: You don't wanna believe it. You ever hear of the Iroquois tribes back east, New England?
- Chief Sheriff Oliver B. Stamp: Yes.
- Hec Ramsey, Deputy Sheriff: Well, the very first settlers - the Puritans themselves - they put a bounty on those Indians, but it would've been a lot of trouble to bring in a whole Indian, so they found an easy way - just cut and jerk on the hair and ya get your bounty money.
- Bella Grant: What're you doin' here? This is a woman's place.
- Hec Ramsey: Well, I'm very fond of women.
- Chief Sheriff Oliver B. Stamp: [In a standoff with Buckley] We gonna wait him out?
- Hec Ramsey, Deputy Sheriff: Back in '78 he held off twenty Comanches for more than a month. If you wanna wait around, s'all right with me, but I might miss my pension.
- Hec Ramsey: [addressing Bella] Well, miss or ma'am or whatever it is, I just gotta figure that anybody who looks like you has got to belong to somebody - and I mean that as a compliment.
- Bella Grant: All right. What he doesn't know won't hurt 'im.
- Hec Ramsey: Well, Hell, suppose he's a friend of mine?
- Bella Grant: Don't friends share?
- Hec Ramsey: Oh, I wouldn't. No way, no how.
- Chief Oliver Stamp: Hec?
- [Hec grunts in response]
- Chief Oliver Stamp: Do me a favor.
- Hec Ramsey: [surly] What?
- Chief Oliver Stamp: Don't just walk in there and shoot him. I'd like to take him home alive.
- Hec Ramsey: [softly] Well, I'll do the best I can.
- [Hec meets a new woman in town in her home]
- Bella Grant: Why don't you sit down for a while?
- Hec Ramsey: Well, I think I'd best be on my way.
- Bella Grant: Are you shy, Hec?
- Hec Ramsey: Not hardly.
- Bella Grant: Then you're afraid.
- Hec Ramsey: Well, no ma'am, I'm not smart enough to be afraid, but I just don't like leavin' tracks in another man's yard.
