In Greek mythology Daedalus was a brilliant inventor but was not associated with war machines. Aside from the famous wings he made a fake cow to help a queen seduce a bull and a maze to hold the resulting human/bull hybrid. Now, Archimedes of Syracuse was famous mostly as the greatest mathematician of his age. But, he was the inventor of a devastating solar heat ray and a ship sinking grappling claw.
