Neill Rea's portrayal of Arthur as whiny and belligerent, but not wholly unsympathetic, appears to be heavily influenced by Graham Chapman's version of the same character in Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), a film which appears to be a prime influence on the Xenaverse overall. There are other subtle "quotes" of that film in the episode, such as Arthur's obsession with being proclaimed king by the Lady of the Lake, and the scene where the Black Knight arrives.

Goofs
Merlin says he's sending Arthur to somebody who can stop him, and sends Arthur back in time to face Hercules, but it's already been established (in the questionable "making of the TV show" gag episodes) that Hercules remains immortal and still lives even in at the close of the 20th century AD. So there was no need to send Arthur back in time but rather just to another spot on he globe where Hercules is located.
