Average episode with an above-average villain.

The story follows the tragic and conflicted Mr. Freeze in his second appearance in the series. After being sprung out of Arkham, Mr. Freeze is recruited by Billionaire Grant Walker to aid him in fulfilling his life-long vision. You might say that Mr. Walker is a cross between Walt Disney and Karl Stromberg, the villain in "The Spy Who Loved Me". At first, Mr. Freeze rejects his proposal, but is soon goaded into helping Walker with his request after being offered a gift he cannot refuse.

I enjoy Mr. Freeze stories and love the character as interpreted by the series. The details surrounding his mistakes and tragedy makes you feel empathy and you find yourself pulling for him to find redemption. It gives him some nice character depth as opposed to other Batman villains who follow the traditional "bad guy" persona.

However, this episode is average at best. 22 Minutes is not enough time to adequately develop the plot and I found it to be rushed at times. There was some good, short dialogue concerning an Utopian Society vs. Free Will, and of course Mr. Freeze always carries every scene he is in. I just wish they had produced more episodes about him.

    Did Not Leave Me Cold!

We have our second appearance of Mr. Freeze. He is kidnapped from Arkham and ends up with an amusement park creator who has designs on destroying the world and becoming a king. He needs Freeze to accomplish this. I don't know the story behind Freeze, other than his condition is one of stark loneliness, especially since the death of his wife. He is lured in, but his anger and unwillingness to let anyone else affect his life, keep him from following through, so he goes rogue. Batman and Robin infiltrate a futuristic city and try to put a stop to it. I like these episodes where there is more of a human element at work rather than a series of punches to solve the problems. Freeze is a sad character.

    • Trivia
The character of Dr Rossum, voiced by William Sanderson, is approached in this episode by Batman and Robin for his knowledge and expertise in the field of robotics. Upon arrival at his office they are greeted by a number of small robotic toy "friends" who keep Rossum company. This is an homage to the character of J.F. Sebastian from Blade Runner (1982), in which J.F. is a genetic designer who lives a life of solitude and creates toy-like robots to keep him company, which he also refers to as his "friends". The character of J.F. Sebastian was also played by Sanderson.

Grant Walker: As I said, I've studied you and your work. Do you realize that in your frozen state, you'll age much slower than an ordinary human? You're practically immortal, my friend!

Mr. Freeze: Yes, eternal life trapped in this wretched shell. What a miserable joke.

Grant Walker: Oh, miserable to you, but a godsend to me! Look at me, Mr. Freeze, I'm an old man. I've created wonders in my lifetime, but there is still so much to do! I want to change as you have, to become like you, a being of blessed eternal cold!

      Mr. Freeze: You're insane.

Grant Walker: Only you have the know-how to duplicate the accident that made you what you are - what I long to become!

[Freeze seizes Walker and holds him aloft]

Mr. Freeze: You want to live like this? Abandoned and alone? A prisoner in a world you can see, but never touch?

[Freeze drops him and turns away]

Mr. Freeze: Old and infirm as you are, I'd trade a thousand of my frozen years for your worst day.
