    Hex gets his due

As a teenager, 'Showdown' served as my intro to Jonah Hex, the infamously scarred bounty hunter of the DC universe. And back then, an old west episode felt odd, but it all gels quite nicely. The story's told in flashback, it's got that great pulp Western vibe, and (here's the key) it's a brilliant use of the Ra's al Ghul legend to tie us back into the days of the frontier. There's plenty of action, explosions and a believable set piece onboard a hydrogen airship. Care has been taken with this story, and it shows.

And as an adult, I get a kick out of seeing David Warner and Malcolm McDowell reunited ("Time After Time").

    This one's a winner.

    Decent Flashback Episode

Since Ra's al Ghul is, for all practical purposes, immortal, he shows up in modern times at a rest home. He kidnaps an old man who can barely move. He escapes Batman and Robin, but leaves behind information about his actions in the Old West. It is the story of a man trying to destroy the railroad system in the early days of the country. He encounters the man and finds a mass effort which will change history. Batman and Robin disappear from the screen until the very end. It is a compassionate Ra's al Ghul that we see in the end, but we are made aware his days are not numbered. I rather liked this offering.

    • Quotes

[Ra's reveals the identity of his captive]

      Batman: Duvall.

Robin: It can't be! He'd be over a hundred years old!

Ra's Al Ghul: He was sentenced to fifty years at hard labor. Of course no one expected him to survive that sentence. No one but me.

      Batman: The Lazarus Pit.

Ra's Al Ghul: When he was a young man, though even its powers cannot restore him now. When his sentence was completed, Arkady simply wandered away. The privations he had suffered had left his mind shattered. I had lost track of him until he turned up in that rest home.

Batman: You left Duvall to his fate a century ago. Why come back for him now?

Ra's Al Ghul: Did you really think, Detective, that in my 600 years of life, I would've sired only one offspring? Even before the Phoenix debacle, I had come to realize that Arkady was too unbalanced and cruel to wisely rule my empire.

Batman: But you couldn't forget about him.

Ra's Al Ghul: What father can ever forget his son?
