    Assured season opener

Bergerac is teamed with a female constable to investigate the smuggling of illegal pesticide, while Willy finds a number of girls have gone missing.

This is a nice, well-plotted start to the season, with two cases that take a number of twists and turns. Even though we don't know quite what they're doing, the audience is aware of who's behind it all from an early stage with a couple of suitably nasty villains.

Maria Duvane is an engaging character who could have provided a different sort of sidekick for Bergerac. Unfortunately, this is her only appearance. Edward Brayshaw, in one of his last roles, makes a memorable appearance as an old sea captain caught up in the conspiracy.

The ending, while satisfying in some ways, is rather bittersweet, with Bergerac only achieving a partial victory and a number of tragedies along the way.

There's a subplot about Susan going from being an estate agent to running a personnel firm. I'm not quite sure what the point is, since neither exactly seems well-placed for future storylines.
