Writer gets killed-good mystery but violent

Bergerac is a fairly good series. This is about a former soldier Major Furneaux who is writing a book. He has video and Mr Morton another writer is helping him with story.

Mr Morton gets attacked and his notes are stolen. The Major gets a warning that the book will not be published.

The book is about a soldiers that go into a town and are ordered to kill many civilians. They won't do it but the leader does and kills many innocent people.

This is very violent even parts of the movie that is shown in the village where this happened.

People are sent to Jersey the town where Bergerac/John Nettles of Midsomer Murder is a cop. He is overseeing this investigation.

The storyline is good but the the fact that only the criminals have guns and not the police makes no sense.

Bergerac goes after one of the most dangerous men who has a gun. He tackles him and subdues him and the man is not cuffed but walks very calmly to the police car. A killer is not calm.

This is like the George Gently and other British series where killers have guns and use them but not cops.

When police do have guns they are told not to shoot. It also shows that detectives and non-uniformed police don't have a gun. This makes no sense.

    Campaign for Silence

Ian Hendry, the original Avenger plays Major Furneaux. Needing money he is writing an explosive expose on a war hero who he believes was a war criminal during his experiences in the Korean war.

However someone does not want Furneaux to sully the name of a great soldier. His ghost writer is attacked and the manuscript is stolen. Furneaux is then arrested for a hit and run accident when he was drunk.

Bergerac is investigating the attack on the ghost writer. The more Bergerac sniffs about the more he suspects Furneaux is being set up. He finds that someone in Furneaux's old regiment is trying to shut him up.

As always Charlie Hungerford is seen knocking about one of the characters. This time Furneaux drinks in the same club as him. Simon Cadell makes an acidic appearance as a publisher.

The version of the episode I saw was butchered to cut out a lot of the violence. It rendered some of the scenes such as the finale unintelligible.

    Plot Held Up

Fairly decent episode. Plot held up in this one from beginning to the end.
