Desert Pursuit

The Cartwright family is taken in good and proper by a trio of con artists who make like they are involved in a big deal, but just want to use Ben Cartwright to get the bank open after hours to rob it. Lorne Greene is shot for his troubles and the bank president killed.

The trio consist of brother and sister Robert Hogan and Marj Dusay a pair of formerly rich people who want to gain back money enough to live as they used to. The third is outlaw Anthony Zerbe who's a real mean piece of work with designs on Dusay.

The last half of the story is Michael Landon pursuing them across the desert. It's a battle for survival for all four.

One of the better of the later Bonanza stories.

Trivia
When Joe forms part of the group of cowboys going after the bank thieves, he is riding another horse and not his Cochise. Update: In September 1964, Cochise was one of 7 horses that were doped and then maimed by an intruder who broke into Fat Jones' stables in North Hollywood. Cochise could not be saved.
