Great start to a great ride

As others have stated, this pilot episode sets the tone for a great eight year run.

Joe's personality, unique investigative skills and bachelor lifestyle are established in the first scenes.

I find it interesting to search for episodes which contains scenes used in the opening credits.

    This is one those episodes.

The helicopter chase comes from this episode and remains in the opening credits straight to the end series.

    Mannix sizzling already

Just look at the ladies checking him out and him checking them out. Bet they were cursing their luck they weren't on their lunch breaks or getting off work in order to chat sexy Mannix up.

Okay, onto the serious part of the review. It's funny how if I had reviewed this episode when I first started watching "Mannix" I would've given it a lower review because Lew and his Big Brother behavior kinda creeped me out to start with. That first watching of season one had me pleased they shook things up and brought in Peggy. Second watching through the series and I grew to like Lew and now I'm disappointed they couldn't find a way to keep Lew and bring on Peggy. The Big Brother cameras have their own little head cannon explanation for me. So Lew's watching all the employees and I'm sure people would say Mannix is being watched the most because the show is centered on Joe Mannix. Who else would Lew be watching? Nah, I'm still going with my Mannix is a sex god answer. Lew's got the hots for him too.

Anyway, you got enjoyable characters and the storyline basically hits the ground running. I honestly felt sympathetic towards Mike Connors and the actress playing the daughter. I realize the Vic Morrow accident hadn't happened yet but it looked like that helicopter was flying a bit too close to both of them.

JOE MANNIX, THE COOL, NEW 60s P.I.

10 Stars for the first go round.

The story goes it all started with a Dino DeLaurentis film for Columbia Pictures, called KISS THE GIRLS AND MAKE THEM DIE (1966). Mike Connors played Kelly, sort of a James Bond-ish hero. Camp stuff, and critics weren't that crazy about it, however, Mike made a solid detective and did stunt work. Sound familiar?

Producer and writer Bruce Geller, who had recently launched MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, was developing a new tough tv detective. MANNIX was born and Mike Connors got the job. In the begining, Geller had Joe caught up in the high tech computer age, and with a boss (Joe Campanella) who was "watching?" via hidden cams? You know this was going to end soon, right?

Although Wickersham (Campanella) was kind of a cool character -- at times -- he cramped Joe's style. One thing Mannix did not need was a boss, nor someone looking over his shoulder.

Still, interesting to see the series' early years, with a slightly younger Mike Conners, ready for a smack down. According to notes, Mike broke his wrist in a fall (which was concealed for the rest of the shoot). On the job training for a graduate from the tv private eye school of hard knocks.

In this pilot episode, tough hombre Lloyd Nolan (a hero to all us film buffs) plays a retired mob boss, living the good life on the golf course in Palm Springs. He hires Wickersham WHO hires Joe to find his daughter, who has been kidnapped. Good writing (especially Bruce Geller) and excellent acting turn this into an nifty mystery. As for the next eight seasons; lots of twists, lots of goons (we love to hate), guns, knives, brass knuckles, poison drinks, bombs etc etc. All bent on eliminating Joe. Hang tight.

Kim Hunter plays Nolan's wife, and doing a very good job of it. The consummate actress. She would go on to appear in many cop shows in the 70s, also remembered for the PLANET OF THE APES series. Catch the final scene with her and Nolan, add a dab of film noir to make it all click.

John Colicos ( Eddie) guest stars, who would make many appearances on the show, likewise MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. One of our favorite villains.

A cool time capsule to see how it all began, shades of PETER GUNN, if not Stu Bailey from 77 SUNSET STRIP.

This episode was nominated for an Emmy, but did not win. More nominations for best tv crime show came in the early 70s, but the show lost, much the same fate as CANNON. The biggest mystery for all us fans.

Solemn note, Bruce Geller died a few years after the series ended, lost in a plane crash at Santa Barbara in 1978. Acclaimed producer, director and writer Barry Crane was murdered some years later. This show stands as a tribute them.

Remastered CBS/Paramount color dvd box set. SEASON 1 EPISODE 1. 6 dvd set. Released 2008.

    • Trivia
According to Mike Connors, he suffered two injuries during the filming of the pilot that continued to give him discomfort for the rest of his life. In the sequence on the golf course, during one of the shots when the helicopter plunged toward him, he threw himself to the ground and dislocated his right shoulder on a hill he hadn't realized was there. And in the fight sequence in the palm grove with Lloyd Nolan's henchman, he broke his left wrist when throwing a punch. Connors slipped in the muddy water and hit harder than he had intended, and his punch landed on a steel back brace that he had not known the other actor was wearing. In subsequent shots, Connors wore a soft cast on that wrist, and kept his left hand out of camera range.
    • Goofs
When Eddie is leaving the terminal, he has the bag from the locker in his hand (meaning the locker key was back in place). A few seconds later as Mannix is chasing him, the bag has disappeared and all he has is the key to the locker, which he drops.

Joe Mannix: Lew, we've been here before. I know you won't change the system. I know I won't change the system. It's logical. Can me.

Lew Wickersham: You're my best man!

      Joe Mannix: I know.
