    Foster Brooks and Susan Howard

Everybody shines in "Monkees Manhattan Style," which finds the group hoping to star in a Broadway musical if they can secure producer Baker's backer. They try to hold on to their hotel room before the manager (Philip Ober) can evict them, while next door are a pair of newlyweds constantly being interrupted. Micky was never funnier, whether impersonating a quack doctor or a chic sheik, who believes the theatre is immoral...along with all his wives! The most notable cast member is 'lovable lush' Foster Brooks, in typical form as a boozy member of the 'Rabbit Breeders Convention,' who spends all his time in the bar waiting until his still-occupied room is ready. The groom, who has trouble opening a bottle of champagne, is played by Geoffrey Deuel (brother of Peter, from ALIAS SMITH AND JONES), while the pretty bride is played by Susan Howard, in only her second TV appearance, remembered for DALLAS and STAR TREK's "Day of the Dove" (as the first female Klingon). The butler at the Millionaire's Club is Doodles Weaver, brother of Pat, uncle of Sigourney, who offers priceless reactions to all The Monkees' impersonations. This is the second appearance for Nesmith's "The Girl I Knew Somewhere," the third and last for Neil Diamond's "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)," but the sole performance of the original Boyce and Hart production of their own "Words" (from Aug 15 1966), soon to be rerecorded by new producer Chip Douglas for the fourth LP, PISCES AQUARIUS CAPRICORN & JONES LTD (and B-side to fourth single "Pleasant Valley Sunday"). This slightly slower take, like the more familiar version, has both Micky and Peter sharing the lead vocals. Broadcast no. 30 (Apr 10 1967), "Monkees in Manhattan" was completed months earlier, 17th in production (Oct 5-7 1966).

    • Trivia
The plot closely resembles John Murray and Allen Boretz' play Room Service. The play was the basis for The Marx Brothers' vehicle Room Service (1938) and Frank Sinatra musical Step Lively (1944).
    • Goofs
The Hotel Manager's eyeglasses have no glass in the frames.
    • Quotes

Davy: Hey, it's Mr. Baker, back from his backer.

Weatherwax: Have you got a baker, Backer? Have you got a backer, Baker?

      Peter: Baker Backer?

    • Alternate versions
For repeat showings on CBS Saturday afternoon, the song "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)" was replaced by "Acapulco Sun" from the Monkees' 1970 LP "Changes".
