    Pure, simple and perfection

For me Mr Bean started with its greatest episode.

I personally find all three main sketches hilariously funny and have so much admiration for Rowan Atkinson's physical performance in each one.

All three are centred around his physical actions, facial expressions and mannerisms with very little else to carry burden of making people laugh. The writers give him three fantastic situations that bring the best of the character.

Anyone who has sat an exam should love the first sketch. So much of it is simply down to what Atkinson does whilst at and around a desk. For me it is a great performance and on par with the famous silent comedians.

The beach is another classic that involves a great physical performance and ends with a fabulously ironic punchline.

In the church scene (similarly to the exam sketch) Bean is in a fixed position for the duration and it is all down to Atkinson's amazing performance to entertain and hold your attention. It is recognisable to anyone who has attended a tedious event where you are talked at for a sustained period by a monotonous presenter. Nowadays church could easily be replaced by a work meeting or "death-by-powerpoint" presentation.

Each sketch is linked by those funny short sequences involving the cars that introduce the running gag well.

Not much a favourite Mr Bean episode

Haven't seen much of the first episode of Mr. Bean, his Mini car originally coloured orange.

I didn't realise, much after first watching this episode, that the exam invigilator is played by Rudolph Walker - who is known as Patrick Trueman in Britain's EastEnders.

As the students had a choice to do either the calculus or trigonometry exam papers, thought invigilator should've logically stated that from the start! As much I don't want to be caught cheating in exam, or spying on someone else's work, would do it better than Mr. Bean was doing - using his feet to shift over. Even if I passed the exam, I personally wouldn't feel like celebrating!

Act 2, he heads to Peacehaven beach yet he's got at one person nearby who will see him changing into his swimming trunks. I don't know why Bean didn't do that sooner, or look for a dressing room, somewhere discrete in a building.

I don't much like the third segment at Stanmer church when he annoys the man next to him, has no tissue for his nose, using his coat pocket instead, has some sweet before it falls down instead his shirt and trousers.

Great beginning of one funny Mr bean series

I always truly loved this very first episode of Mr bean in a way did these goofy stuff in this episode. First he is driving his orange mini car on the way to his university while trying hard to get past his easy to annoy three wheeled car enemy. Then he arrives with a big hit in the car park nd does this stunt to put his old padlock on his car. Afterwards he arrives in the exam room and starts sucking at the exam while he is trying to copy off this man next to him. GAGGLE, GAGGLE! then he is on the way to this ordinary beach where he tries his best to get his clothes off to have a nice hot swim and there is a blind man somehow watching! GAGGLE! And lastly he goes to church and tries to stay awake and a man next to him is freaked out. TRIPLE GAGGLE! This is one show that will just cheer you up when sad or just make you happy for the rest of your boring day!

    • Quotes

      Student: Done your revision?

Mr. Bean: Oh, yes. I concentrated on trigonometry.

      Student: I've done calculus, mainly.

Mr. Bean: Oh. I believe they concentrated on calculus last year.

      Student: Oh. Oh dear.

    • Alternate versions
For the original VHS releases, the audio tracks for the first three episodes were remixed to accommodate the NICAM stereo upgrade from episode four onward. There are additional, albeit subtle sounds such as environmental soundscapes added to outdoor scenes. These remixed audio tracks are available on some of the earlier PAL DVD sets, with the 20th anniversary edition from Universal reverting back to the originally broadcast audio tracks.
