Cowboy star Rod Cameron plays the owner of a sprawling ranch and deep in debt. He'd like to sell the place, however there's few buyers -- until big daddy Texan Nelson Barclift (marvelously played by Alan Hale, Jr) comes to town, ready to buy him out. How lucky can Cameron be -- until it's discovered his wife, Eula (Diana Millay) has a connection with Nelson.
Next thing you know, Nelson is killed in a horrible car crash and the story now changes to an insurance scam. Did Eula attempt to undermine both her husband and Nelson? Comes another twist -- Eula is murdered. Who faked her out? Assuredly, the whole case is turned upside down. Complicated, definitely, but so much fun to watch unravel. Had Orloff not written this mini classic, I would have guessed it was Robert C. Dennis, who wrote similar material for Hitchcock.
True, a shame Alan Hale's part wasn't extended because he's a scene stealer, just like his famous father. All the actors work double time here. Rod Cameron always a treat, Diana Millay soon to go onto fame in DARK SHADOWS (as Laura Collins). A cult hero to us kids.
Guessing this whodunit is the defined specialty of the house. Thanks to director Jesse Hibbs for another winner. SEASON 7 EPISODE 11 remastered CBS dvd box set. All nine seasons are on dvd in an impressive box set.
He's got himself a young wife in Diana Millay and she's a frisky thing, running off to San Francisco and poor Cameron can't figure it out. What she's cooking up besides some monkey business is an insurance scam and also possibly to have Cameron sell some land of their's.
When the future skipper of the Minow Alan Hale shows up with a Texas twang and oodles of money he says he has and willing to pay way over what the land is worth, it all sounds too good to be true. But then Hale is killed in a car and then Millay is strangled and Cameron is found over the body.
It's not only Cameron's naiveté that's a problem with this episode, but it is fairly obvious who is the best one to be involved in an insurance scam if it isn't Cameron.
One of the lamer Perry Mason's.
