- Gil Favor: I got a cousin, woman, teaches in a school house back East. She tells me those boys daydream about becomin' cowboys. Of all the jobs a man could pick, why'd he ever want to choose this way to make a livin'? Three thousand head of God's lowest form of life, cattle. If they don't die of rick fever, strangle in a dust storm or trample their fool selves to death, then the market'll go gown to two cents a pound on the hoof. They might as well have died before we set out. But they need food back East. It's my job to get this herd movin'. My name's Gil Favor, trail boss.
- Gil Favor: Butchered?
- Pete Nolan: It's out past where Joe Scarlett's been working. Somebody downed it with a bullet between the eyes and carved off a hind quarter clean as a Sunday roast.
- Hannah Haley: The whiskey sapping old coot that called himself a manager was driving.
- Gil Favor: What happened to him?
- Hannah Haley: He sneaked off in the night with two of our horses. Guess he figured they're worth more than we are with us out of work.
- Gil Favor: Sharpshooters, knife throwers, and fancy roping artists. But not much on fixing broken wheels.
- Hannah Haley: There are some things a woman can do and some she can't. The ones she can't, she hopes maybe a man will come along.
- Hannah Haley: Mmm. Pretty moon up there.
- Gil Favor: Makes a man feel he don't stand nearly as tall as he thinks.
- Hannah Haley: You don't know what to make of me, do you?
- Gil Favor: [They kiss but Gil breaks away] All I know is that I made some rules for my men. I've gotta live by them too.
- Hannah Haley: Well, I guess that's that.
- Joe Blaney: You looking for trouble?
- Gil Favor: Understand you're fixing to make a crossing.
- Troxel: You think you can stop us?
- Gil Favor: Troxel talking for you?
- Joe Blaney: Why? Does it bother you?
- Gil Favor: I like a man to do his own talking.
- Troxel: I do my own talking, Favor, and I'm telling you, get out of here or I'll burn you down.
- Gil Favor: You can try it. But this time it has to be out in the open.
- Troxel: I can do it anywhere.
