    Shows off James Murdock's talent

James Murdock is given the opportunity to show off his talents in this lighthearted (but also dramatic) and entertaining episode. I think he was really a hidden gem on the show. Mercedes McCambridge has a presence about her that commands your attention. A strong character but yet very much a fine woman. This episode moved along and kept your attention. The combination of actors with their unique characteristics really made Rawhide and interesting show.

    Mushy's Ma

A really nice guest cast was assembled for this Rawhide story involving the mother of Harkness Musgrove better known as Mushy to the trail hands. Apparently Mushy was something of a mama's boy and him working on a cattle drive is not something that Mercedes McCambridge approves of.

She ain't thrilled when the stagecoach she's on is held up either by a gang led by Albert Salmi. McCambridge recognizes one of the gang so they want her dead.

Let's say in the end she recognizes James Murdock may just have the right stuff for the drive.

Besides those already mentioned Hank Worden plays the stagecoach driver and Bobby Driscoll plays a young punk who was another passenger on the stage.

McCambridge really shines in this story.

    • Quotes

Mushy: I always thought a trail drive would be an excitin' life, full of adventures. Well, maybe it will be when I'm a real drover. But right now, I don't seem to be too important. All my adventures are peelin' potatoes and carryin' water and washin' pots and pans and itchin' Mister Wishbone's back when it scratches. Why, I'm the cook's louse for Mister Favor's trail drive. The men call me Mushy because, well, I guess maybe because it's my name.
