Mediocre skits with a legendary (albeit underrated) musical performance

Not a whole lot to say about this episode. John Goodman has hosted the show many times and along with the cast has delivered better skits than the ones shown here. The real meat of the matter belongs to the musical performance by the grossly underrated alternative group Faith No More. Their performance of "Epic" is outstanding and visually entertaining, as Mike Patton climbs up into a prop on the stage. Patton hangs in the fan during Jim Martin's guitar solo until jumping back down with perfect timing to belt out the chorus of the song. Their performance of "From Out Of Nowhere" is equally outstanding, as Patton and Gould thrash around on stage and trash the drum set.

The legendary performance by an outstanding rock group more than makes up for some of the less than stellar comedic skits. One must remember the time period (the early 90s), however, as the worst SNL skits back then were better than the best SNL skits today.

I give it an 8 out of 10 for the musical performance alone.

    • Trivia
In the book "Live From New York - an uncensored history of Saturday Night Live", Julia Sweeney explains that she had created the character of Pat while she was performing as part of the Groundlings, and had also played the character during her audition for Saturday Night Live. The mannerisms and body language were based on a male co-worker she met while working as an accountant. When she first tested it out as an impression, some friends told her it was good but she didn't seem very convincing as a man. That's when she came up with the gimmick for the character, to have Pat's gender be a complete mystery to all others.
