    Night shift

This episode takes a more serious tone as JD, Turk, and Elliot navigate their responsibilities while in charge of the hospital for the night. Although the laughs are few, the focus on their growth as residents adds depth to the story. Carla joins them, reinforcing the camaraderie among the group and highlighting their friendship.

On another front, Perry and Jordan take a significant step towards a more genuine relationship, aided by Carla's insightful nudging. The dynamics between the characters continue to evolve, and it's refreshing to witness Perry confront his feelings for Jordan. This subplot serves as a nice contrast to the main storyline, providing a glimpse into the complexity of their connection.

Cox and Jordan ...made for each other, or deserve one another?

Dr. Cox tries to convince Jordan that they should reunite, and that he is not the same self-sabotaging person he was when they were married. However, Jordan leaves after she hears what is supposed to be an introductory speech praising evil Dr. Kelso that Cox turns into a roast. Fortunately for Cox, though, the audience misconstrues his remarks as sarcastic and humorous. The funniest part of this episode is the appearance of hospital lawyer Ted (Sam Lloyd) and his real-life acapella group spending an entire night-shift singing TV theme tunes, including upbeat renditions of The Six Million Dollar Man and Charles in Charge. You see, TV theme songs are their specialty. From that point forward, "The Blanks" are frequently featured in the show.

    • Trivia
This is the first episode, after 11 appearances in season one, in which Sam Lloyd is credited as "Ted" and not "Lawyer."
    • Goofs
When Elliott and Carla are confronting the night-shift ER doctor, the clock on the wall shows a time of around 5 minutes past midnight. In the next scene, Dr. Cox goes home to Jordan and then the two of them go the Dr. Kelso's banquet. It seems highly unlikely that a banquet would take place so late at night.

J.D.: This, this isn't like being a janitor, okay! It's not just like something everybody can do.

Janitor: Oh. So you can do my stuff, but I can't do yours?

      J.D.: Yes!

Janitor: Okay, hotshot, what would you use to get a coffee stain up off a tile floor?

J.D.: I don't know... the... rough side of a sponge?

      [silence]

      Janitor: Dammit.
