Amanda breaks Kalas out of jail to kill him and doesn't realise the downside. Meanwhile, Joe and Methos have to face Don Salzer's widow exposing Immortals to the world.
There's a feeling of something momentous building, with the reappearance of old characters from the middle of the season and even beyond. Unfortunately, there's a little too much going on. The focus should have been on the conflict between Duncan and Kalas, but apparently that wasn't enough to sustain two episodes, so the whole thing gets slowed down by the subplot with Christine Salzer, a rather thin character who's basically Horton with better motivation.
Kalas comes across as a decent villain in what screentime he gets, committing a cardinal sin by cheating to get a Quickening, treating his henchmen as casual and disposable, and exuding menace towards Duncan when they meet. Maurice gets some decent material in his last major appearance. Sadly, Methos lacks his usual spark, mostly coming across as a naughty schoolboy that Duncan and Joe have to babysit.
Despite what it says in the Goofs section, I don't think that is Kalas' lair where Amanda's being held, just somewhere similar. She puts in a surprisingly good showing against Kalas' goons too.
A whole host of characters return, with Maurice back from last episode; Joe back from Take Back the Night; Kalas, Methos and barmaid Danielle all back from Methos; Amanda back from Rite of Passage; and Xavier St. Cloud back (in flashback) for the first time since Season 2's Unholy Alliance to add a welcome touch of class. Joe, Kalas, Methos and Amanda will all be back in Part 2. This is Danielle's last appearance, while Xavier will be back in another flashback next season in Double Jeopardy, and Maurice will be back in Season 5's The Modern Prometheus. British character actress Sian Webber adds some gravitas as Christine. In addition to Duncan, Joe, Kalas and Xavier, the Watcher files Christine looks at depict Anne Devlin from An Eye for an Eye and Brian Cullen from Courage.
