The mind of an Immortal...or not

Duncan has repeated dreams and visions of fighting a hooded figure, which are starting to impinge on his waking life. His Immortal friend John Garrick tells him this is a race memory that affects all Immortals.

I feel like this episode should be better than it is. It does at least seem to be trying to do something different, with Duncan taking a mental battering throughout. But ultimately it's an episode of misdirection, with an act of subterfuge that doesn't even work. Again, we're several steps ahead of Duncan instead of figuring it out with him, although at least we're over halfway through the episode before it becomes clear what's going on, rather than it being given away in the opening scene!

The flashback is rather confused: Does Garrick want to escape or not? What does he hope to achieve by exposing himself and Duncan?

It doesn't help that poor Anne gets several levels of torment from Duncan because of the pointless status quo of him refusing to let her know the truth. Oh, and Richie gets an odd subplot about managing a musician?

Garwin Sanford, one of those actors contractually obliged to appear in anything shot in Vancouver, plays Garrick. Second appearance of Marcia, who was last seen in Courage: She'll make her third and final appearance in Song of the Executioner. Duncan attacking Richie under the influence becomes rather dark after watching the next two seasons. Duncan mentions Darius, Constantine and Amanda as Immortals who are older than him.

    • Trivia
John Garrick is the first immortal seen to have psychic powers (other than the "buzz" ability of all immortals to sense each others' proximity). He is not the last.
    • Goofs
At the end of the episode, Duncan misquotes Hamlet. He says "There are more things in heaven or hell, Horatio, than are written in your stars." The correct quote is "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
    • Quotes

      Duncan MacLeod: What a waste.

Richie Ryan: You mean Garrick? Mac, he tried to kill you! What's to waste?

Duncan MacLeod: Insight. Knowledge. He spent centuries understanding his own mind. If only he could have shared what he knew...
