Brother Paul, an Immortal monk and old friend of Duncan's, is killed. When disasters befall those closest to him, Duncan suspects an old enemy, Kalas, is responsible.
It feels like this should be better than it is, given it's essentially setting up the rest of the season. This is one of the most personal attacks we've seen on Duncan in a long time, with Joe and Anne both being targeted simply to get at him. Perhaps where it fails is in keeping Kalas as a shadowy figure for so long. We need him and Duncan to meet outside flashback for him to really feel like a threat, especially when Duncan undoes his manipulations so easily.
Still, the end manages to elevate it. Kalas gains a partial victory, Duncan's life is in tatters and people have died with no end in sight. Duncan recalls Tessa as an explanation for why he continues to keep Anne out of the loop, and given what's happened here, it makes sense.
First appearance of Kalas, who'll be back next episode. Last appearance of Marcia, last seen in Shadows. Mike is mentioned.
