With the fourth season of HOMICIDE that had the lowest rated by me episode so far, I hoped that the following seasons would have been without bad ones. And with this one, the fifth it's a promising season.
When the story begins Pembleton returns to work despite the objections of the top brass that wants to move him in a position with no responsibilities but has issues in returning to his normal life thanks to the physical and mental limitations caused by his stroke recovery. We soon learn that Megan Russert moved to France for living with a diplomat that impregnated her, and soon after Bayliss and Munch team up for the case of Mrs. Uba where the only witness is... a pig! But as they start tracking down the victim with the help of the pig, a school is besieged when a gunman storms in the school, kills two staff members and takes a class hostage.
As with all first parters in the show (this is probably the fourth considering that in the fourth season we had two) when it ends you can't wait to see where it's going next. And this has both serious moments (when Pembleton returns to work and has to adjust to life as it was before the heart attack or when the hitman goes to the school) and some unintentional funny ones (such as when they can't believe that the pig is the witness of a murder). Overall, a great season starter.

- TriviaThe last name of Baylis and Munch's homicide victim is Uba, Baylis asks where the name comes from, wondering if it's possibly Italian. The surname of Uba (sometimes spelled Ubah) is actually from West Africa, more specifically it originates from the Igbo people of Southeast Nigeria.
- GoofsAt the hostage situation, a girl with both of her knees shot is loaded into an ambulance. Immediately after, the same girl is shown sitting at one of the medical tents - a difficult task when one is shot through both knees, never mind how she got out of the ambulance.
