I came at these shows in reverse. Sure, I knew NCIS was a spin-off of JAG, but the very idea that Lawyers run criminal investigations was just silly, so I never watched JAG. Then I figured I'd give it a try. I mean, JAG was OK, if shaky. The bombastic title music was a bit over the top. The 1990s SuperHero Harmon Raab monologue was annoying as hell, but eventually disappeared. Then somewhere around season 5, the show changed course from being about investigation or trial to being a rom-com soap-opera. The Season 7 christmas episode killed this show for me. So, having endured all of that, I decided enough was enough, and to just skip to the NCIS pilot episodes.
WOW, if the show was based on the characters in here, NCIS would have been cancelled within a season. Fortunately, everyone gets a major re-write.
I can only conclude, however, that the JAG characters have also had personality transplants, and Raab acts like a total jackass for both episodes. Everyone is fairly unlikable.
It makes me glad that I'm quitting this series. While this episode was better than most of seasons 5&6, and what I saw of 7, I cannot say that it was in any way good, and I certainly won't watch beyond these episodes.
You can tell this is a backdoor pilot in only the loosest sense as everything including the title fonts are full on NCIS, skipping even the JAG titles.
A proper cross over or backdoor pilot gives credit to the new characters but also reinforces the current cast to place everyone in a good light. That just doesn't happen here. I can only say this is 4/10 for a JAG episode, if that.

- TriviaThe two-part episode sequence Ice Queen (2003) and Meltdown (2003), aired in the spring of 2003, was the pilot for NCIS (2003).
- GoofsThe first "factual mistake" is, in itself, mistaken. Actually, "011" at the start of a number is the USA code to access international numbers (the European and British equivalent is "00"). Using the example given in this "goof", to dial a number in Belgium, an American would start by dialling "01132"; For the UK "01144"; and for Russia "0117".

Dr. Donald Mallard: [flirting with Vivian while performing an autopsy] You sure you won't have dinner with me tonight, Viv?
Special Agent Vivian Blackadder: Oh, Ducky, you're disgusting!
Dr. Donald Mallard: The pursuit of sex is an affirmation of life, Vivian. That's why older men are so lascivious.
Special Agent Vivian Blackadder: I'm talking about your lack of respect for the dead.
Dr. Donald Mallard: I have the utmost respect for the dead.
Special Agent Vivian Blackadder: Well, that's obvious from the way you speak to them.
Dr. Donald Mallard: If you were dead, wouldn't it be nice if you were spoken to, rather than about?
- Crazy creditsA different typeface is used for the episode credits on the two-part episode "Ice Queen" and "Meltdown" as this was the pilot for the later series NCIS (2003).
