    Surely the best Creek episode

This is my favourite episode of Creek and the one I've watched the most often.

    Murder, cold, clinical and calculated.

Is this the best episode of Jonathan Creek? I would say there is a very strong case for it, it's dark, it's funny, it's surprising, and asks the wonderfully intriguing question......

Can a body pass through a solid stone wall?

The Halloween setting is great, and the costumes look terrific, adding to the gothic tone.

Love the acting, Peter Davison and Pippa Haywood really do stand out.

There is a degree of cleverness and smartness, one I thought they definitely recaptured in Satan's Chimney, but it never feels silly or smug, it's just an all around classic mystery.

    Outstanding, 10/10.

    • Trivia
The garage at the rectory in Danse Macabre was built specially for the show, from Cotswold stone, and then demolished again after filming was completed.
    • Goofs
The garage has an electronic up-and-over door, but no other exit points at all (hence the mystery of the disappearing "skeleton man"). However, this is illegal in Britain; no electronic doors can be installed if there are no ordinary exit-doors which can be opened with a key, precisely so no-one can be trapped within due to electrical failure.

Maddy Magellan: [entering restaurant with Gary Lobo] I don't think I'll be spending the morning in a tank of boiling hot ink again in a hurry...

[picks up a menu from a waiter]

Maddy Magellan: I feel like a poached octopus!

[waiter nods his head, as if acknowledging an order]

Gary Lobo: [at a table] Yeah, Personally I found her novels disturbing yet, er, compelling. When she writes, for example, of a mutant fetus that strangles a young girl with its umbilical cord. The metaphor is, er, obvious

[starts to touch Maddy's hands across the table]

Gary Lobo: yet to mine the vilest scenes of obscenity to get to the core of the human condition...

Maddy Magellan: [cynically] ... and making wads of money selling loads of tacky books didn't really come into it?

[the waiter brings along the food]

Maddy Magellan: What the hell is this?

Waiter: Your order madam - the poached octopus...

Maddy Magellan: [spluttering] Poached oct-? Have you gone stark staring bonkers?

Waiter: If there's been a mistake, my sincerest apologies. It's no problem, I'll have it returned and you can place another order.

Maddy Magellan: No alright! Go on then. You might as well leave it now that it's here I suppose...

      [begins to tuck in]
