- Cotton, Erik and Joe on the way back to Laredo are in a saloon when Lemuel Beamish enters late at night asking to learn to play poker and he will provide the drinks. The four play with Cotton being the big winner as Beamish finesses the cards. The next day he asks to ride with the Rangers but has a hard time keeping up. When his saddle breaks, Erik and Joe leave him with Cotton. Cotton and Beamish stop to spend the night in an abandoned fort. An Indian stabs Beamish to death but not before he asks Cotton to deliver his case along with a message to his niece arriving in Laredo the next day. Before delivering the case, Cotton is attacked again but rescued by Joe. He delivers the case to Milly Beamish who can't find what she expected in it. She questions Cotton who states there was a message but it was garbled. She asks Cotton to take her to the fort to pay her last respects to her uncle. After they leave, Erik, Joe, and Chad learn the money they won was counterfeit. Sensing trouble they follow Cotton to the fort where he and Milly are in trouble with Beamish's partners.—Anonymous
