Jack Lord Takes the Pilot Seat

Dark-suited good guy Jack Lord (as Jabin "Jab" Harlan), who likes to operate "Above the Law", has been hired to track down the man who framed an innocent Kansas man. To achieve his mission, Mr. Lord allows a criminal named Scanlon (John Kellogg) to escape capture by Reese (Neville Brand). Instead of bringing in Scanlon, Reese takes Lord into Laredo. There, Lord briefly meets Chad (Peter Brown) and Joe (William Smith); and, he argues with Capt. Parmalee (Philip Carey) about working outside the law. Undaunted, Lord sets out to complete his mission, with Reese tracking his progress...

This episode is an obvious "try-out" for Jack Lord as a TV series star; and, he does have the presence and ability to carry the hour. Lord is quite good in the "western" genre; and, his Emerson (and Shakespeare) quoting vigilante character is very appealing. This premise, if a "pilot", did not become a television series. In a few years, Lord would find great TV success as police detective "Steve McGarrett" on "Hawaii Five-O". Reese provides good "sidekick" support; and, Lola Albright (as Lilah) is a strong guest star. This isn't much of a "Laredo" episode; but, it is a fairly effective showcase for the guest star.

    Possible pilot for Jack Lord

Jack Lord in between TV Series Stoney Burke and Hawaii 5-0 puts in a guest appearance on Laredo as a mysterious bounty hunter/gun for hire who is hired by Laraine Stephens to help affect a prison break. Not of her husband who is scheduled to hang in a few days, but another man who could lead Lord to the stolen money that could clear Stephens's husband.

What was interesting in this episode is the relationship that develops between Lord and Neville Brand. The way Reese Bennett is played by the other two Rangers is what happens with Lord and Reese who is on the trail of the same escaped prisoner in his capacity as a Ranger. Lord plays him like a piccolo, but in the end Brand saves Lord's life.

I think this episode was a possible pilot for another series that could have starred Lord. Anyway bigger things were in his future.
