    Ridiculous and Pretencious Serling

As with most episodes of "the Loner" this one tries to be poetic and profound, but just comes off as silly and a very bizarre morbid drama, stealing lines from old Twilight Zone episodes.

It is wonderful seeing great actors like Beau Bridges (Lloyd's Bridges' son), Pat Hingle and James Whitmore, but without real character development they seem very stage-bound, just reciting lines dramatically.

Pat Hingle torments a wounded man (Beau) trapped inside a mine. Somehow he expects to get money from the man and then shoot him, but the man just calmly plays his guitar and threatens to kill anybody who tries to help him.

Except for the costumes, there's nothing really Western about the story and it could have been set in the 20th century just as easily. It is part 1 of a 2 parter. I think Rod Serling fans will enjoy it to some degree, but it will only make them want to see his better "Twilight Zone" episodes.

    • Quotes

Johnny Sharp: Tell me somethin', Mr. Colton. Here you sit on a cold rock floor listenin' to a stranger. Santa Fe, is that where you're headed? What makes a man chop a day out of his life and just give it away free to just any punk unlucky enough to have to pick that day for dyin'?

William Colton: Santa Fe will be there tomorrow or the next day. And you're not just any punk, Johnny. Among other things you play a good guitar, and you tell a pretty fast story.
