    High society hijinks

'Of Sound Mind' is an episode full of levity when Magnum inherits the estate and $50 mil fortune of a deceased prankster, leaving three irate family members out in the cold. Turns out, the guy was murdered and the bequeathing is a retainer for Thomas' services. But you just know that that newfound wealth isn't permanent, so the big draw here is seeing how Magnum will end up back at square one.

The last episode I watched was possibly the series' darkest ('Did You See the Sun Rise?'), so a lighthearted affair was desirable. Not so much for Magnum being stranded on the floor in a suit of armor, but mostly for manservant Carlton. He had a good presence here, and his scenes with Selleck were the best.

    Pitts Special engine Start

As usual, this episode was an excellent example of the Magnum genre. I had seen the series in my younger days, and replays on cable renewed my interest and appreciation for this excellent series. It is a gem in our television treasure troth!

As the former owner of a 1946 Aeronca Chief Prop Start airplane, I watched closely when the Pitts Special used in the opening flight sequence was started. A fellow pulled the prop as if to "prop start" the engine, then there was the distinct sound of an a starter engaging and the engine starting. In other words, it looks like the prop start part was either for effect or there was a mag problem with the engine where it required a pull through for the starter to engage. Did anyone else notice this??

    • Trivia
The biplane which Wilson MacLeish takes off in at the beginning is an older variant of the Pitts Special, the first aircraft specifically designed for aerobatic maneuvers and also one of the most popular remote-control aircraft model planes, explaining why the exploding plane looked so much like the plane he took off in: both were exactly the same plane, only in different scales.
    • Goofs
Carlton calls the revolver he shows to Magnum a "Colt .45, vintage 1860." The revolver he picks up is a Colt Bisley, not made until thirty-four years later, in 1894. In 1860, Colt made only percussion revolvers, not ones which would chamber metallic cartridges like the Bisley.

Jonathan Quayle Higgins III: [Magnum is "playing" the saxophone] Magnum... Magnum!... Magnum!

Thomas Sullivan Magnum, IV: Hi, Higgins!

Jonathan Quayle Higgins III: How fiendishly deceptive of you, Magnum. I could have sworn I was hearing the emasculation of a large rodent. To my great surprise, I see the sounds are emanating from what I thought was a harmless musical instrument.

Thomas Sullivan Magnum, IV: Cute, Higgins, real cute.

      [plays sax again]

Jonathan Quayle Higgins III: Why, Magnum? Why do this terrible thing?

Thomas Sullivan Magnum, IV: Higgins, I'll have you know I was very good. I was the second best sax player in my High School band.

Jonathan Quayle Higgins III: Well, how many sax players were there?

Thomas Sullivan Magnum, IV: Anyway, I just saw this in a pawn shop window and thought I'd like to try and get my chops back.

Jonathan Quayle Higgins III: May I suggest that your "chops" are irretrievable.

Thomas Sullivan Magnum, IV: Higgins, did you come here just to abuse me?
