    Wonderful episode, but...

It was absolutely wonderful to see true-life stroke victim actress Ellen Corby finally retiurn to The Waltons in season, episode 22, portraying her real-life aphasia. Her character Grandma is warmly welcomed back, and the whole family tries hard to anticipate her every need to the point that Olivia at one point frets that Grandma might not like them "mollycoddling her." So, my thoughyt is, wouldn't it been more realistic for Grandma to have carried about a notepad and pencil about, so she couid have better communicated with her loved ones, rather than be so frustrated all the time? Just sayin'.

Not a fan of this episode

I enjoy this show but I admit I have never been a fan of grandma. She was always so pious and overly proud. Would yell at everyone and then turn around and do something horrible but never apologize. Olivia isn't much better. However this episode was despicable. They should not have put Ellen back on the show just for ratings. It was uncomfortable to watch. I felt bad for her and not in an " oh the director is challenging you emotionally" way. The uncomfortable gobbledygook they had her spewing was terrible. Grandpa is a real treasure and I hate that Will Greer died shortly after this episode. Rest in peace, Mr. Greer.

    • Trivia
This was Will Geer's final appearance of the show. He died 3 weeks after this episode aired. The first episode of the following season, The Empty Nest (1978), was dedicated to Geer's memory, and would feature a story line dealing directly with the death of Grandpa Walton in the series. Coincidentally, Geer's last appearance in this episode also marked the first appearance by Ellen Corby's since her devastating stroke following the episode, The Elopement (1977). As a result of this stroke, she lost a majority of her power of speech and the use of one side of her body. Starting with this episode, she would be featured occasionally, including in some of the subsequent movies that followed the end of this series.

    • Quotes

Narrator: [narration as John 'John Boy' Walton, Jr. reading from his journal] A house alone has little meaning, it's the people who live there who bring it to life and give it character. All during my grandmother's absence our house and everyone in it seemed to long for her return. Grandpa never stopped hoping that she would come home, and finally there came a day when his prayers were to be answered.
