Without getting into detail, this was a poignant episode of high quality typical of the show, and as sad as it is to witness or experience the end of an era, you must endure it if you are a fan of the show.
What a shame the actor exited this iconic series, which still stands as a significant article of americana, only a bit more than half way through it's 9 season run. He was creating something iconic which would be cherished by so many americans. I guess he thought bigger and better things were in store, but alas, they were not.

- TriviaSome flashback scenes are from The Waltons pilot movie, The Homecoming, which starred Patricia Neal and Andrew Dugan as Olivia and John Walton. For this episode, new "inserts" were filmed with Michael Learned and Ralph Waite, which is why neither actor appears in any two-shots with Richard Thomas during those flashbacks.
- GoofsIn the flashback sequences culled from the pilot TV movie "The Homecoming: A Christmas Story," the shots with Olivia and John Walton had to be redone since their roles were played by different actors in the movie. The house also looked markedly different in the pilot, so when the reshot scenes were edited together with the shots of John-Boy from the pilot, it looks like they're in two different houses.

Narrator: [narration as John 'John Boy' Walton, Jr. reading from his journal] It came as a coincidence that just as I finally completed my first novel, Elizabeth, for the first time, became enthralled with a book. I wondered if what I had written would ever be published and read half so avidly.
