    John Walton<Good Father

I can't believe how John Walton is portrayed in this episode. Ben is the most independent and industrious of the Walton Clan, second only to maybe John Boy. The fact that his father is against him from the very start of the episode is disparaging. Of course he ends up being right in the end only to prove he has just so much omnipotent vision, as if he were a prophet. He never gives Ben credit for trying his best and never supports him throughout. It reminds me of my own selfish, evil father and is completely out of character for John Walton, considering every single other episode. This is by far my least favorite episode of the entire series. Truly despicable parenting.

Narrator: [narration as John 'John Boy' Walton, Jr. reading from his journal] Most of the time when strangers appeared on Waltons Mountain they were people who had taken the wrong turn from the main highway and had gotten themselves lost. But the coming of World War Two was to bring many strangers who were actually looking for the mountain, and while we didn't exactly have a traffic problem, we did have traffic. And that's what gave my brother, Ben, the idea for the boldest venture he had ever attempted.
