    Changing lives

Mr. Gordon is wrong regarding Samuel. Every child should be given a chance to learn, even if he is older than the others and work at home takes a lot of his time. He just needed a little bit of help. However, I definitely agree with him about Elizabeth. She is not a baby. Olivia is spoiling her for no reason and it's wrong. She belongs at her desk like all of the other students. And then there's Marcia Woolery. I simply can't stand her. She is one of the few characters on The Waltons that I do not like at all. Those who call her "fickle" are being nicer than necessary. I'm sorry, but she deserves what she gets. It was also fun to see Jackie Earle Haley so young. I have had a crush on him since The Bad News Bears.

    • Trivia
Ralph Waite did not appear in this episode due to a contract dispute with CBS. His character's absence was explained by having John Walton away from home working in Norfolk.
    • Goofs
Although the opening narration and the series' general progression place the action in 1935, two current events reported on by students--the Peace Conference in Brussels and the specific trans-Atlantic flight described by Jim-Bob--both occurred in the first few days of September, 1936.
    • Quotes

Narrator: [narration as John 'John Boy' Walton, Jr. reading from his journal] In 1935 life on Waltons Mountain began to change. Our activities took us more and more away from home and it was only knowing most of us would all be there again at night that helped us keep the family ties that had always been our strength. To help pay back the money we had borrowed from the bank, my father had taken a job in Norfolk and, when possible, he returned home on week-ends. My mother, under the additional pressures of being a substitute teacher, found her life changed, and these changes took some getting used to for all of us.
