Josh helps Arnold escape from fake liberator Mandeville

Josh tries but fails to get Arnold from the clutches of pretend liberator Mandeville (played by John Dehner). But the "liberated" Mexicans have plans, revealed to Josh, who is captured, otherwise is to be taken to Mexicali for trial (while the others head toward Ensenada)

Josh loses his gun to the Mexicans, gets it back, but then loses it to Mandeville's people. At episode end, Josh is gunless, with no good prospect of getting it back.

There is a scene where a shadow of Josh's gun on a tent wall tips off Mandeville. But Josh is outside the tent and the light is inside.

Fast-Moving Episode South Of The Border

The scene is some sort of army outpost on the southern tip of California, near Baja Mexico. The post is ready to make a trip south to "liberate" the slaves in Mexico. They talk big, but what they really want to do is liberate the gold and silver. Josh Randall comes by looking for one of the men on the post. He's been hired to bring him back to his father. The army group, led by (no rank given) "Grant Mandaville" (veteran TV actor John Dehner), won't spare him and has Randall clubbed over the head from behind. When he wakes up, the troops are gone so he high-tails it south to catch them.

Still on the trail in Mexico, Randall is captured by irate Mexicans, who had just had their village burned down by the renegade soldiers. One thing after another happens to Josh in this fast-moving episode.

    • Trivia
In this episode Josh Randall loses his Mare's Leg weapon. As they escaped the Mexican Army, Josh Randall leaves it behind. It is doubtful he could retrieve it afterwards.
    • Goofs
Wanted Dead or Alive is set in the 1870s. Grant Mandeville claims that his mission is to free the enslaved people of Mexico, but Mexico abolished slavery in 1837, long before the US did. Looks like the writers of this story didn't let facts get in their way.
    • Quotes

Gregg Haggerty: That boy sure can talk!

Grant Mandeville: More than that, Gregg; he believes in what he's saying. Faith. That's what it takes to sell everything.
