    Sneaky Sorkin

As the segment title suggests, this is an episode with lots of both trivial and even insoluble daily problems that come up for the White House staff to handle, and as expected our heroes Janney, Lowe and Whitford do an exemplary (and funny) job of handling them. The roster sounds familiar even decades later; school vouchers, reparations for slavery, a new panda bear for the national zoo, various romances, and even rightwing hate groups posing serious threats to Zoe and Charlie.

What writer Aaron Sorkin does so skilfully is juggle this array of content, and the heartwarming performances by our beloved set of regulars (especially Janney, who gets spotlighted this week), while sneaking in a high impact, thoughtful argument to end the episode. Guest star Carl Lumbly is perfect as a civil rights lawyer awaiting confirmation for a key Justice Department post who eloquently bests Whitford in their discussion of reparations.

    • Trivia
Aaron Sorkin found Allison Janney lip syncing to Ronny Jordan's The Jackal in her trailer, and wrote it into the episode. Janey was initially doing it too well, and was told to make it more awkward.
    • Goofs
Jeff Breckenridge says his African ancestors were kidnapped and taken to New Guinea before being shipped to the USA. New Guinea is in the Pacific ocean north of Australia, and he should have said either Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, or Equatorial Guinea, all of which are in Africa.
    • Quotes

Sam Seaborn: Mallory, education is the silver bullet. Education is everything. We don't need little changes, we need gigantic, monumental changes. Schools should be palaces. The competition for the best teachers should be fierce. They should be making six-figure salaries. Schools should be incredibly expensive for government and absolutely free of charge to its citizens, just like national defense. That's my position. I just haven't figured out how to do it yet.
