A rare miss from TWWWest writer Henry Sharp

You gotta love a new element discovered by French scientists and named Franconium! But The Wild Wild West is set in 1870, exactly when France invaded German territory in the Franco-Prussian War. So I guess usually reliable writer Henry Sharp was charged with devising a plot around Prussians scheming to steal the deadly new element from U. S. safekeeping. Except that none of the supposed French cast speak any or even have legitimate accents. And neither are they especially good actors! So chalk this whole installment up to a weak idea, executed poorly. I barely give it a rating of 6 out of 10 stars, and that's rounding UP, because Conrad and Martin seem to sense when extra humor & oomph are needed, as those qualities certainly are here.

    A Weak Episode

THE WILD WILD WEST is still one of the coolest shows in TV history, but this one has too many flaws. First, the supporting cast who are supposed to be French all speak in a clichéd 'Pepe LePew' accent. Plot-wise, the holes in the story could have easily been remedied by a couple more rewrites. As it is, for once you can actually out-think West and Gordon as they solve the plot (they make some really stupid mistakes in this script, which imho diminishes their hero status). Lastly, the dialogue is very, very predictable. You already have the words in your head that the characters are going to say before they even open their mouths. Even a magnificent series like this has to produce an occasional lemon. Sadly, this episode is way below par.

    • Trivia
During the second act, when West enters the funhouse at the Hannibal Amusement Park he first encounters a bug-eyed monster in the darkness. The monster was originally a rejected design concept for the alien visitors in the film, It Came from Outer Space (1953); a design which two years later became the basis for the monstrous Metaluna mutants in the film This Island Earth (1955).
    • Goofs
Near the end when West walks into the mansion where the meeting is being held, just as he enters, Lt. Armand Renard can be seen talking to Artemus at the bottom of the staircase ... but Renard was shown as having died earlier. They re-used the exact same shot and replaced the earlier dialogue with music.
    • Quotes

Artemus Gordon: Think of that. Five minutes, underwater, submerged, and you'd still survive. That is, if somebody was trying to drown you.

James T. West: What if doesn't work?

Artemus Gordon: Bring it back. I'll make you a new one.
