    Exellent

This, quite simply, is a brilliant episode of a brilliant show, that sees Kevin learn more about his Dad.

    Beautifully written and performed.

Brings it all back from 1989

I vividly remember this episode from when it was first broadcast in 1989 (UK), and specifically when Jack's boss shouts at him. That scene took me back around 35 years in a heartbeat.

I'm going through a rewatch of The Wonder Years, after getting the full boxset a few years ago and never taking the time to do it, so that time is now.

The poignancy, nostalgia and memories these programs have a pull that is almost irresistible; watching from 1989-1993 at a time which was then set 20 years before, and now realising that we are now 35 years past those original viewings. Time waits for no man, but the speed it travels leaves me dumbfounded.

I'm looking forward to the rewatch.

    • Trivia
Kevin talks about how he wants to be a centerfielder for the San Francisco Giants, for a career, when he grows up. Years later, in the first season of Boy Meets World, Cory Matthews, played by Fred Savage's little brother, Ben, has the same dream job. But, for the Philadelphia Phillies.
    • Goofs
(at around 15 mins) The evening radio broadcast said that the Tigers beat the Yankees, 5 to 4. This game would have to have been June 1, 1968.

When Jack Arnold complains, "I can't believe they lost to the Senators," the "they" would have referred to the Cleveland Indians, who lost to Washington that day, 6 to 2.

However, the radio broadcast also said the AL President Joe Cronin dismissed two umpires, Bill Valentine and Al Salerno. This dismissal happened September 16, 1968. Washington Senators did not play that day.

      Kevin Arnold: Dad?

      Jack Arnold: Hmmm?

Kevin Arnold: When did you decide you wanted to become a manager of distribution and product support services?

Jack Arnold: [Jack chuckles] Hah! Sorry. Just a funny sort of a thought. Really wanting to be manager of distribution and product support services. I mean it's a good job, but, uh... it's not what I thought I'd be doing with *my* life.

Kevin Arnold: What did you want to do?

Jack Arnold: What - are you kiddin' - a professional baseball player.

      Kevin Arnold: No, really.

Jack Arnold: Really? Well, I... did have a fallback position...

      Kevin Arnold: This job?

Jack Arnold: No. Not this job. I never told anybody this before... .not even your mother. When I was your age, I wanted to be a captain of a ship.

Kevin Arnold: A captain of a ship?

Jack Arnold: Yeah. Ya know, one of those big ocean liners... or a freighter... or an oil tanker... Be out there on the ocean in the middle of the night, navigating by the stars. Course, they use instruments for all that now, but... I didn't know that. Yeah, thought it would be the greatest thing in the world.

Kevin Arnold: How come you didn't do it?

Jack Arnold: How come? Well, ya know... one thing leads to another... went off to college... Met your mom. Next summer I got a job on a loading dock here at NORCOM. Rest is history.

Kevin Arnold: You'd have made a great ship's captain, Dad.

Jack Arnold: Nahhhh - probably not. Probably get sea sick. Huh. Ya know, Kevin... You can't do every silly thing you want to in life. You have to make your choices... You have to try and be happy with them. I've think we've done pretty well, don't you?

Kevin Arnold: Yeah, I think we've done great.
