    The Unfortunate Little Schnauzer

Has Jon Lovitz ever been funny? He's certainly not here, though does manage to pad out a rather thin episode of the show.

This sitcom would change significantly from its 4th series onwards, becoming much more about sex jokes than plot, and on the basis of this you can see why a change was made - they seemed like they were running out of stories.

It's a decent, but unspectacular episode overall.

    Unfunny

A really weak episode with pretty much zero funny jokes. The writers couldn't think of anything funny, so they turned to an old, desperate trick - when you can't think of anything funny, go for obnoxious and outrageous and crank up the laugh track annoyingly loud and hope that it will somehow pass for funny. It never does, of course.

Jon Lovitz is being obnoxious to 11 here, and considering that he is almost never funny, his scenes make for an excruciating watch. Evelyn is a terrible, annoying character from episode 1, and she is no different here. The plot is substandard even for this kind of sitcom - why would a competition for the best jingle for a product include a song about orphans that is neither a jingle nor a commercial for a product?

    An episode to skip.

    • Trivia
At the awards banquet, when Archie Baldwin (Jon Lovitz) sings his song for the orphans, he appears under a large decoration of a music staff (treble clef) that stretches the entire width of the stage. On it, the series' theme ("Manly Men") melody is written. It is in the key of C major (the same key heard in the show's title and credit sequences) and is relatively accurate, except that the lilting dotted-eighth/sixteenth figures (used when the words "manly men" are heard in the credits and again a few notes later) are shown in the decoration as even eighth notes. Also, the symbol marking the fourth note as a Bb (B-flat) is on the space above the B line, where a C note should be.
    • Goofs
Evelyn is shown sitting in Archie's Rolls Royce, leaning out the drivers window, sitting directly next to Archie while talking to Charlie. The next shot shows Archie driving away and immediately Evelyn is shown sitting back in the passenger seat, a few feet from Archie.
