Doug tells Willie he can't adopt Emmett because Willie is a "minor," even though it's been established that Willie is out of high school and has already been married and widowed. However, under California law at the time, it's likely Willie wasn't old enough to adopt Emmett because he wasn't at least 10 years older than Emmett and wasn't related to him.
