- Nancy Lawrence Maitland: [Jeff enters Nancy's room, where she is laying in bed doing her college work] What do you want?
- [Jeff advances to the front of the bed]
- Nancy Lawrence Maitland: I said, what do you want?
- Jeff Maitland: Anything YOU want.
- [Nancy scoffs and returns her attention to her work]
- Jeff Maitland: Oh, Nancy, you're so mean.
- [Nancy looks up at him in annoyance]
- Jeff Maitland: All right, if you want to lie here like Camille and let your father put the thumbscrews to me, downstairs, if you need the satisfaction, that's fine, but if you want to cut out this nonsense and just come on home, where you know you want to be, where I hope you want to be, home in your own bed and I'll be waiting for you.
- Nancy Lawrence Maitland: [laughs while trying to hold back tears] Well, that is very sweet of you. Do you think maybe I should call first? I mean, just in case?
- Jeff Maitland: [sighs] No. I'll be alone.
- [Jeff walks to the door, but turns around]
- Jeff Maitland: Oh, and Nancy, make it one thing or the other, okay? I'd much rather you punish me here than in my own bedroom.
- [he exits the room as a frustrated Nancy ponders her decision]
- Jeff Maitland: [after an annoyed Doug answers the door to see Jeff standing on the porch] May I come in, sir?
- Doug Lawrence: Nancy doesn't want to see you.
- Jeff Maitland: Yeah, I know that. I'd still like to come in.
- Doug Lawrence: I don't want to see you, either.
- Jeff Maitland: [smiles] Well, can I hear from Mrs. Lawrence or Willie or Buddy? You see, maybe I can get in on the minority vote.
- Doug Lawrence: Oh, it's my vote you need, boy, and charm won't buy it.
