    My Favorite Martian Meets 8472

This is an interesting episode in that it never has its principles come to blows. It is more about posturing and trying to prevent a horrible consequence. Janeway and the Voyager crew move in on a San Francisco recreation of Species 8472. They are interested in the plans of this group, the one they attacked several episodes previously. Ray Walston appears as the leader of this species. The whole thing just is to pat and easy and hence my criticism.

    Decent Episodes

Wouldve liked to see a better episode of this. They wae cool at first and then we get a cliche of Starfleet species 8472. I do like the actor Ray Watson tho so this made it better. Byt I wish it was different.

    THIS is Star Trek

This is what Star Trek *used* to be about. Peace, understanding, communication. That's what made Star Trek the phenomenon it is. Not the fancy special effects, not the warring, fighting, etc. It's exploration, and celebrating the differences. Not reacting in fear. Extending the hand of friendship BEFORE fighting.

Today's "Star Trek" just doesn't do this, it's more about the fancy special effects, the conflict, the fighting. Somewhere today's "Star Trek" has these lessons, but they are so far in the background, there's no point.

Seven of Nine represents today's mentality, shoot first, forget communication and understanding, just kill 'em all. I'm glad the writers had her admit she was wrong.

    Back to diplomacy

After so many action-packed arcs, it's nice to see diplomacy, communication, and efforts to prevent violence from escalating, with careful planning aimed at reaching an agreement and always pursuing peace. Above all, Janeway proves herself to be a truly principled Federation Starfleet captain. A great episode.

And don't get me wrong, I enjoy action stories - but sometimes I also like seeing what Gene Roddenberry aimed for: an optimistic story about the future that leaves you with a smile at the end of the episode.

This, together with "Extreme Risk" are underated episodes in my opinion, it deserve more love.

    • Goofs
Given the meticulous precision and superior abilities that Species 8472 has demonstrated in the past, it is strange that they neither detected the Delta Flyer in orbit nor immediately recognized Chakotay and Tuvok as being not of their own kind.
    • Quotes

Captain Kathryn Janeway: You've got Voyager's comm frequency; you know how to contact us. I hope we can keep this process alive.

Boothby: Don't call us, we'll call you.
