Delivers brilliantly with no lameness in sight

'Tiny Toon Adventures' proved frequently that it could do episodes structured as (mostly three) segments very well. The quality in most may not have been consistent, with for example one segment being especially great and another only average, but all the show's segment-structured episodes have a huge amount to recommend. "Henny Youngman Day" has an absolutely bonkers title that doesn't make an awful lot of sense on paper, but also intrigued.

"Henny Youngman Day" is not quite one of my favourite episodes of 'Tiny Toon Adventures', but is still wonderful regardless. Segment-structured episodes tended to vary, with for example one particularly great segment but also in the same episode containing a segment that is significantly weaker than the others. "Henny Youngman Day" (consisting of "Stand-Up and Deliver", "The Potty Years" and "Lame Joke") is an example of all the segments working equally wonderfully and much funnier than their bizarre titles sound. The title of the episode also makes sense once seeing the episode itself.

It refers to the name of the character (the title character of the episode) that replaces, or should that be substitues for, Daffy Duck in his absence. Here a hen caricature in the comedian occupation, the perfect animal to caricature and he is a comedian character that isn't obnoxious and is good fun. The wraparound story is pretty unique because of him, there are not many wraparound stories that feature a guest character heavily and one unlike any seen previously.

All three segments are winners and they do a great job at being relevant to the theme of the episode, faring better than most segment structured 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes at this. "Stand-Up and Deliver" absolutely delivers, is the wackiest of the three segments and showcases Babs, her skills and her flaws hilariously and on occasion affectingly.

"The Potty Years" is a lot more mature and funnier than the title makes it sound, it has a lot of energy and the main story doesn't feel repetitive or too tired. "Lame Joke" is far from lame, actually very wacky and witty and the characterisation and interaction are great throughout.

Regarding the individual elements, the animation is rich in detail and vibrant, while the music is characterful and full of infectious energy and dynamic orchestration. The theme song is one of early 90s animation's catchiest. The writing is very sharp and witty, with lots of hilarious dialogue in particularly "Stand-Up and Deliver". The voice acting is spot on.

Wonderful episode all in all. 10/10

    • Trivia
This is the first of three "Tiny Toon" episodes animated by StarToons in Chicago, Illinois. Its founder, Jon McClenahan, had previously animated numerous scenes for Kennedy Cartoons during the first season before being given the chance to try a full episode. StarToons would work on numerous other Warner Bros. Animation shows during the nineties, including Taz-Mania (1991), Animaniacs (1993), Road Rovers (1996), and Histeria! (1998), before shutting down in 2001.
    • Goofs
In "The Potty Years", the toddler Plucky is shown attempting to flush Furrball down the toilet. The Furrball depicted in this episode segment whose plot is intended as a flashback is showing Furrball in his current age and past potty-training. Furrball should be depicted as a kitten during this timeline.
