Confusing Episode with an Unclear Ending

The basic plot of this episode is clear... but the final scene involving Lawyer Frank Callaway (actor Dan Barton) and Bad Guy Cliff Beaumont (actor Don Gardner) is confusing. I don't want to spoil the plot, so no details... except to say that the ending leaves you wondering, "Why?". Otherwise, a good show with gunfire, fistfights, intrigue, and great performances by all of the actors.

Cliff Beaumont: [after being put in a jail cell] Look sheriff, it was Ben's idea fixing those charges. He thought Winnie Joe would be convicted for sure.

Sheriff Clay Hollister: Well he wasn't. He had a pretty good lawyer. You're gonna need a better one.
