The Mad Square

John Hubley produces a short animated film based on Edwin Abbot's 1884 classic. It is the story of an inhabitant of a two-dimension world who is exposed to the three-dimensional world and goes mad as a result.

Hubley shows Flatland as a series of geometric shapes ornamental in their profusion. His protagonist, A. Square (the pseudonym under which Abbot wrote his book) is voiced by a confused-sounding Dudley Moore, near the start of his career. Hubley had conceived the project while teaching animation at Harvard University. The script is credited to him, although Eric Martin is credited as the director.
