Peter & Jackie, a girl in whom he's very interested, are exploring the abandoned mansion of a Professor Smithers, when they inadvertently let loose an enormous "vine thing" that drains energy and causes much chaos & destruction as it rampages through NYC.
Having found a working time machine, Peter goes back through time (to three million B. C. or so), changes into Spider-Man, finds Professor Smithers, and learns what he has to do to stop the rampaging vine thing in the present day. All while making life miserable for the local monsters, of course (among them, a giant frog and a giant centipede-like thing).
The goofy monsters are an utter hoot here, and made quite an impression on my young mind when I first watched this at a very young age. Most of the vine things look like Venus flytraps with arms and googly eyes, and they're hysterical. Their leader, who looks like the present day vine thing, is given to saying things like, "How dare you challenge our vegetable superiority! ACH! Just looking at your filthy protein body DISGUSTS ME!" before siccing a pet monster on Spidey.
All in all, lots of fun; I especially enjoy the creepy / groovy composition "They! Are Coming" that plays at one point.
The ending is nice. For once, in Jackie, we get a girl who's really *into* Peter for a change!
