Dark, funny, different
The film leaves a few ends untied: we never quite learn what exactly happened between Otis and his brother, but we're given enough back story to guess the rest. We also never see the original "Kim." Which would've helped people better understand the obsession.
Somehow, though, as everything is coming apart - it all comes together. Audiences in both festival showings loved this movie! I hope it gets distribution before Warner releases it to DVD this summer.
The Missed Birthday Party
"Otis" is almost a masterpiece of sick dark humor, with magnificent performances of the unknown Bostin Christopher and Illeana Douglas, very well supported by the great cast. The plot makes jokes with dramatic situations and is a sort of parody of the countless movies of torture that have been recently released. Unfortunately the weak open conclusion is not satisfactory and is disappointing. For my surprise, in the Extras of the DVD, there is an excellent alternate ending called "The Birthday Party" and in accordance with the explanation of the director, this would be the original conclusion of this movie. I really did not understand why this brilliant ending was not used. My vote is six.
Note: With the original "The Birthday Party Alternate Ending", my vote would be eight.
Title (Brazil): "Otis, o Ninfomaníaco" ("Otis, the Nymphomaniac")
A Bold, Messy, and Unforgettable Tonal Mess
The film's biggest strength is its willingness to be completely unhinged. Bostin Christopher is disturbingly perfect as the titular killer-not some slick mastermind, but a pathetic, overgrown man-child trying to force his victims into a twisted 1980s prom fantasy. When the tables turn and the victim's parents (played wonderfully by Daniel Stern and Illeana Douglas) decide to take matters into their own hands, the movie finds its bizarre, darkly comedic groove.
However, the film is far from perfect. The tonal shifts are often jarring, and the script feels schizophrenic, never quite sure if it wants to be a send-up of horror tropes or a straight-faced thriller. The low-budget, "made-for-TV" look and sometimes sloppy editing also hold it back from being a true cult classic.
Ultimately, Otis is a solid 6/10. It's a flawed but fascinating experiment that is far more memorable than most of its DTV horror contemporaries. If you have a stomach for bleak humor and appreciate genre-bending ambition, it's worth seeking out.
"Black Comedy" failure.......

- Quotes
Agent Hotchkiss: You should feel good now. I have an 80% recovery rate.
Will Lawson: 80 percent? Really?
Agent Nogi: Well... we only recovered 60 percent of Debbie Pilter.
Agent Hotchkiss: Right. Beautiful legs. Track star.
- Alternate versionsGerman version was cut by ca. 7 seconds (torture scene with Will and Elmo) to secure a light SPIO/JK approval (the FSK rejected the film).
