Too cheesy for grownups so hope kids like

It was beginning to look like a good story. Then the cheesiness came into play. A bit over acted and silly. Again, maybe the very young kids will like this adaptation. I soon lost interest and wished Gilbert Gottfried (the goose) would just shut up already.

The creation of Jack and the Beanstalk, I believe, was hurried and not too much focus on creation. I mean, the giant was not even a giant, more like a big puppet, etc.

Most likely you will take the kids along to a theater to see and hope they will enjoy just the silliness of it all and not my luck of seeing a screener as an adult and no kids along while expecting a totally different style of movie. A More serious adaptation maybe? I think Disney would have done a better job.

My forecast for reviews of Jack and the Beanstalk will be, in grade level, user's (C) and critics (C). Or a 5 rating in IMDb.

    My kids loved it

My kids loved it, but my wife and me, not so much. The only saving grace is that it has quite a few 80's and 90's pop culture references. Those were fun.

This has some iconic actors and it's totally for all the family to watch. It's super mild, my 3 year old really liked it and didn't get scared at all.

The show is super weird and quirky. There is this one super silly fight scene that made my kids laugh.

I will say that the goose's voice is pretty annoying, and the show could have done better without him. I literally have nothing left to say about this show. How the heck did they convince these big name actors to play in this movie?

Unfunny characters and jokes with a few nice elements

A general misfire of a film with a few elements which do work.

The movie is pretty insane in some respects opening with a fantasy dream sequence in which our hero rescues a girl from a modern warehouse in a parody like James Bond opening, though the site of a 10 or 11 year old girl biting her lip, falling into the arms of the boy and being held with fluffy handcuffs felt for a second like I'm in a 1970s Broke Shields movie and that the police's online child protection unit are going to be onto you. It's certainly not something they'd put in a kids movie today. Kids won't notice though. We then get going in the main story which seems to be a vaguely Victorian setting judging from the props, bike and police uniform though we also get Indiana Jones references which makes no real sense. The performances from all the adults are very overbearing and cheesy, its panto level at times. The boy is pretty grating and we get yet more unfunny and random elements a random carrot, how funny....a random kung fu sequence, just because...... Other bits just don't work, no young kid will get references to Hamlet or Achilles. The cinematography varies, some of it is quite nice, in one very disturbing Brian Peck shows up. I hope he wasn't allowed anywhere near the child actors. What was at least positive about the film was the use of real sets, practical effects, the special effects overall worked, it felt a bit like The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, lots of real things there in the screen in a fairy tale like way. In the end its actually quite a faithful telling of the main beats of the original fairy tale, I can't say that about most adaptations.

I wish though the film had better jokes, and also more emotion to it. I remember so strongly as a kid tearing up watching films like Snow White, Shrek, Toy Story. This film just doesn't have the weight those do.

Not that bad. Give it a chance.

Truthfully, this movie made me feel like I was 12 again watching classics such as Dark Crystal or The Never Ending Story. It even had some Terry Gilliam mixed in which, I enjoyed. I am also a huge fan of the story, Jack and the Beanstalk. I like seeing movies that get the kids involved, climbing on the couch which, is the beanstalk at home. We all had fun with the film.

It was nice to see Chevy Chase doing what he does best again.

I'm not saying it's going to be a classic but it was certainly better than I expected. The director Gary J. Tunnicliffe did a good job trying to make an old fashion feeling kids film.

For this being Collin Fords (who plays Jack) first film, he did a great job and really enjoyed him.

Give it a chance. I agree to the kids will like it more than adults.

    Loved this film

Absolutely loved this film, the classic story updated a little and with enough going on to keep the younger viewers occupied. For me, in my mid 50's this was a great re-telling of the original story. had a great time identifying the older actors (and voices). For those that give this film a bad review, put yourselves in the shoes of a 6 or 7 year old seeing and hearing the story for the first time and accept it for what it is, a fairy tale! I thought that the standard of acting, the production and all of the sets were superb, in particular the goose that laid the golden egg, Christoper Lloyd as the schoolmaster and Katey Sagal as Jack,s mother were particularly good performances
