People need to stop comparing it to Hill House. With that being said, there are characters that were necessary to move the plot along that served no other purpose. Those characters were poorly written with storylines that either needed to be dropped or looked into further. There are obvious characters with chemistry, and obvious ones without; you'll know which is which by the end. Overall, a beautiful gothic romance...
