Season 1 AMAZING! Season 2 AWEFUL
I had held off for a long time watching this as I thought you had to like soccer to enjoy the show. Finally in 2023 I gave in and was pleasantly surprised!
Season 1 was fantastic and reminded me of the great "fish out of water" shows/movies from the 1980s and 1990s. Everything about this was exceptional with lots of humour, but also a deep dark side as well. There was tension throughout but Sedekis' character was always trying to see the bright side of things. Casting was also fantastic...
... but then Season 2 happened. What happened to be exact?
Season 2 is mostly bad to be blunt. It was like they fired all the writers, and hired some middle aged women who had never seen an episode but gave them cliffsnotes about the first season. This show became basically "Sex & The City 2022" and all the tension and character was sucked out of the show completely.
It was like everybody was given SSRI's and all the tension was lost. Ted became watered down and all the main/male (white) characters were relegated to secondary roles. The middle eastern trainer became a head coach. The captain of the team is relegated to a boy toy and the main "protagonist" is all but forgotten so that one of the black soccer players can become the best on the team (Apple's wokeness shining through)... though soccer itself takes a very backseat role to the stories about girl power and older women sleeping with younger men (meanwhile the older man sleeping with younger women is villified).
It became really hard to get through season 2 to be honest.
Season 1 for me was a solid 9/10.
Season 2 was at best 6/10.
