Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine in Red, White & Royal Blue (2023)

Review by yoyothemagnificent

Red, White & Royal Blue

6/10

A little disappointing when compared to the book

As is often the case with a movie based on a book, especially if one loves the book, has read it multiple times and knows all the characters, their quircks and many layers, a movie simply cannot live up to the story in my head. This one is no different. It's entertaining, endearing and witty, and I can see they tried, but it's just not good enough to do the book justice.

Right after, I lowered my expectations and watched it again (it just came out and I haven't had any sleep yet). It was a little better. Problem is, with the character switches, merges, drops and additions, you lose two separate side plots entirely, which makes the movie feel one-dimensional (the villain character felt too random. Probably because he was, because he wasn't in the book!) I have a few good points too: the characters Zahra and Amy were cast so good (but again, Amy had a very interesting backstory)- you know what, just read the book. If you want to read funny dialogue, a romantic love story, and explore some serious character development, Read. The. Book. Okay I'm done.
