Michael Sheen and Tom Payne in Prodigal Son (2019)

Review by emboquet

Prodigal Son

10/10

Give season 2 a chance, the best Ep. yet is 2.4 !!

Prodigal Son was my favorite new show of the 19-20 network offerings by far. I looked forward to it every week which is rare for me for network show! The actors are exceptional, especially Tom Payne and the always amazing Michael Sheen, and I like the premise and both the "murder of the week" and longer stories that played out over the season. The Family therapy episode and the finale were my favorites of season one.

I was looking forward to the return of Prodigal Son and then I was slightly disappointed with the first two episodes of season two. The writing didn't seem as good, and they hamfisted a couple work stories that didn't work... this is what some of the reviews here are talking about. People that liked season one and then didn't like the new direction of the show.

I admit they didn't do their PC story points well at all, you could tell it was added in just to score SJW points and that just doesn't sit well with people! It has to be done naturally otherwise it's basic virtue signaling and hurts more than it helps! That being said, don't give up on season two!! It's pretty extreme to curl up into a ball and give up on a show due to a tiny "trying to hard to be woke" misstep.... talk about being a snowflake LOL.

If you can get past eps 1 and 2, 3 is pretty good and then season two episode 4 is PHENOMENAL!!!! Best episode of the show and one of the best I've seen in recent history on any new show! It's perfect start to finish and Michael Sheen is even more brilliant than usual. It's funny and exciting and there are some great twists and turns!

If you weren't feeling season two and gave up, come back to the show! I promise it's worth it! I can't wait for the next episode I'm completely impressed with their quick turnaround after a lackluster start. I really liked the first season, and there are so many stories that can still be told this show could go on for a long time (I would like more backstories to the rest of the cast!). Give it a shot, highly recommend Prodigal Son!
