    The villains are weak

The plot of the movie opens, as all Conan movies do, with the whole gang (Conan, Ran, the Detective Boys, Agasa, Sonoko, and Kogoro) traveling to an island that is rumored to contain the cutlass and pistol of renowned female pirates Anne Bonnie and Mary Read, as well as a treasure that they are said to have left behind. This implies that before the mystery of where and what the buried treasure is finally revealed, our heroes become caught in a treasure hunt, treasure hunters, and the typical ridiculous antics.

The mystery itself can be solved really quickly, and the plot itself is really not that strong. It's funny how quickly an English-speaking audience can solve most of the clues compared to the primary cast. The 'twist' involving the riches is also rather obvious. Particularly for a Conan movie where the enemies are supposed to be exciting, the majority of the newly introduced characters are from OK to obnoxious, and the villains are weak.

The animation in the movies is sufficiently improved for the action sequences, even though the art is essentially the same as in the show. Nonetheless, the island's background is somewhat uninteresting. Though the movie does have some fairly amazing diving moments, when I heard the title, I was more likely to picture ocean scenes and underwater scenes than tourist islands. Everything appears fine else.

Sunken Treasure, Hidden Motives, and a Voyage into the Deep

What if a seaside vacation turned into a perilous hunt for pirate gold, where greed and legend lure divers into deadly waters? The Movie blends maritime folklore with crime drama, but its execution leaves the mystery adrift.

The story transports Conan and his friends to a resort town famed for pirate legends. Soon, local divers and treasure seekers become entangled in a series of incidents tied to the myth of two female pirates and their hidden riches. As Conan investigates, the narrative shifts between lighthearted summer vacation scenes and darker explorations of human ambition beneath the waves. The ocean setting provides striking visuals-coral reefs, shipwrecks, and treasure-laden caverns-but the film often emphasizes spectacle over deduction.

Analytically, the film's strength lies in its thematic exploration of greed, myth, and the allure of adventure. The underwater sequences showcase technical ambition, giving the film a distinctive aesthetic within the Conan series. However, the core mystery is relatively thin, with predictable motives and limited twists. Supporting characters feel underdeveloped, functioning more as plot devices than as compelling suspects. The result is a narrative that entertains visually but lacks the intellectual rigor and emotional depth expected from the franchise.

Rating: 5/10 - visually refreshing with its oceanic theme, Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure offers a light but shallow mystery that entertains in parts yet struggles to anchor itself as a memorable Conan film.
